BEIJING (AP) — Taiwan’s defense ministry said Saturday that China sent dozens of aircraft and vessels toward the island, just days after the United States approved a $500-million arms sale to Taiwan. The defense ministry said in a statement that 32 aircraft from the People’s Liberation Army and nine vessels from the navy were detected in the 24 hours between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday.Of these, 20 aircraft either crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait or breached Taiwan’s air defense identification zone. In response, Taiwan tasked its own aircraft, vessels and missile systems to respond to the activities, the defense military said.China sees self-ruled Taiwan as a renegade province to be taken by force if necessary. In the past year, Beijing has stepped up military drills around the island in reaction to Taiwan’s political activities. The Chinese military launched drills around Taiwan last week as a “stern warning” after Taiwan’s vice president stopped over in the U.S. w...Fukushima residents react cautiously after start of treated water release from wrecked nuclear plant

IWAKI, Japan (AP) — Fish auction prices at a port south of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant fell Friday amid uncertainty over how seafood consumers will respond to the release of treated and diluted radioactive wastewater into the ocean. The plant, which was damaged in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, began sending the treated water into the Pacific on Thursday amid protests at home and in nearby countries that are adding political and diplomatic pressures to the economic worries.Hideaki Igari, a middleman at the Numanouchi fishing port, said prices of flounder, Fukushima’s signature fish known as Joban-mono, was more than 10% lower at the Friday morning auction, the first since the water release began. The decades-long release has been strongly opposed by fishing groups and criticized by neighboring countries. China immediately banned imports of seafood from Japan in response, adding to worries in the fisheries community and related businesses.A citizens’ radiati...Shooting that followed fight on street in Pasadena, California, wounds 5

When Californians are asked to identify the biggest problems facing the state, homelessness and the high cost of living consistently rise to the top of the list. While they are not one and the same, experts say both can trace their roots to the same problem: a housing shortage in the Golden State.A recent study conducted by the University of California, San Francisco found that in the six months prior to becoming homeless, survey participants reported a median monthly household income of $960, which amounts to just $11,520 a year.According to Zillow, the median rent for a two-bedroom apartment in California is three times that: $2,869 a month or $34,428 per year.“The results of the study confirm that far too many Californians experience homelessness because they cannot afford housing,” said Dr. Margot Kushel, one of the study’s authors. “I think it’s really important to note how desperately poor people are, and how much it is their poverty and the high housing costs that are leading ...Bay Area high school football: Friday’s scores, Saturday’s schedule

(KRON) -- California Highway Patrol confirmed it was involved in a chase Friday across the Bay Bridge in both directions. The suspect was taken into custody just after 9 p.m. in Richmond. CHP said the pursuit began at about 3:20 p.m. when a Costa Costa County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a white Infinity traveling westbound on State Route 4. Police pursued as the car went onto Interstate 80, CHP said. The suspect then went across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco. The deputy chose not to follow the car for the sake of the other drivers on the road, but a sheriff's helicopter followed the vehicle overhead as it drove recklessly and at high speeds, per CHP. The driver eventually crashed into cars in San Francisco, and CHP officers arrived at the scene. As officers prepared to possibly chase the suspect on foot, he took off driving, striking two cars and a police K9, CHP said. The dog has non-life-threatening injuries.
