MIAMI (AP) — Phillies slugger Bryce Harper was struck on his surgically repaired right elbow by a pitch from Marlins starter Braxton Garrett in the third inning against Miami on Saturday, forcing him to leave the game after the inning concluded.Harper got attention from a team trainer for a couple of minutes before heading to first. He was later thrown out trying to steal third.Harper was replaced at designated hitter by Bryson Stott when his turn came in the fifth. The two-time MVP has played exclusively at DH since his return on May 2 from Tommy John surgery in the offseason. The 30-year-old Harper also was limited to the DH role last season as he delayed the surgery until after the postseason. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla, (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen needs a third elbow surgery.Rasmussen’s surgery is scheduled for July 24, and the procedure will be done by Dr. Keith Meister, Rays manager Kevin Cash said before Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Braves.“Unfortunately, he’s going to miss the rest of the year,” Cash said. “He will get what they’re calling the brace put in. I know that the doctor that he talked to, Dr. Meister, just felt like this is probably the best course of action to get him back on the field as quick as possible and as healthy as possible.”Cash didn’t rule out Rasmussen from returning mid-season next year.Rasmussen, who has been on the 60-day injured list with what was called a right elbow flexor strain since May 12, previously had Tommy John surgery in March 2016 and August 2017.“Ras is frustrated,” Cash said. “We were all kind of hopeful that maybe he’d be pitching for us at some point this season, but it...The presidents of Brazil and Colombia meet to boost cooperation ahead of Amazon summit

MURRIETA, Calif. (AP) — Six people were killed when a small plane crashed and burst into flames in a field during the second of two landing attempts in fog at a Southern California airport before dawn Saturday, authorities said. The crash of the Cessna C550 business jet occurred around 4:15 a.m. in Murrieta, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. It took firefighters more than an hour to extinguish the flames, which had engulfed the plane and charred about an acre of vegetation just north of French Valley Airport, said the Riverside County Fire Department. All six people on board died at the scene, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The victims were not immediately identified. The plane, which had departed from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, crashed during its second approach to French Valley’s single runway, the National Transportation Safety Board said in ...How Marcus Smart’s trade to Grizzlies was in works long before deal made

The shocking trade that sent Marcus Smart from the Celtics to the Grizzlies seemed like it came together in an instant. But in reality, it was a long time in the making. The deal, of course, nearly didn’t happen on June 28, when the Celtics’ initial plans to acquire Kristaps Porzingis that included Malcolm Brogdon, not Smart, broke down. About 90 minutes later, the Celtics pivoted to trade Smart to the Grizzlies. It didn’t just develop spontaneously, though. The Grizzlies have long admired Smart and had expressed their interest in him long before that night last month. As the Grizzlies introduced Smart in Las Vegas on Friday, Memphis general manager Zach Kleiman explained how their acquisition for Smart came together. They targeted the point guard as a potential addition this summer, even if it didn’t seem likely.“When we started putting names on the board, there was no one higher than Marcus,” Kleiman told reporters in Vegas. “This was early on, it was like, ‘Hey, this is the pie in ...Local leaders voice concern ahead of vote on North County water district separation

SAN DIEGO -- Ahead of next week's controversial vote on the detachment of two North County water districts from the San Diego County Water Authority, several local leaders voiced their concern for how the proposed divorce could impact water rates. The proposal -- submitted to the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFC) earlier this year -- is the latest in a years-long fight over whether the utility districts, Fallbrook Public Utility District and Rainbow Municipal Water District, can leave the county's central water agency to switch providers to a cheaper option in Riverside County.During a meeting of the LAFC in June, representatives for the two agencies argued that rising rates for water through the County Water Authority has placed a financial burden on their customers, mostly small farmers, that they cannot afford.“This is all about fairness. Over the last decade, the Water Authority has risen rates on Fallbrook and Rainbow by average of 8% each year. It’s not sustainable and t...Peter Nero, a Grammy-winning pianist and ex-conductor of the Philly Pops, dies at 89

Nero was 89.Nero died Thursday at Home Care Assisted Living Facility in Eustis, Fla., according to his daughter, Beverly Nero, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Services will be private.Nero colored his renditions of pop songs — from Cole Porter and George Gershwin to the Beatles and Bob Dylan — with classical, swing, Broadway, blues and jazz melodies. He often called his sound “undefinable” and was not offended when others called it “middle of the road.” (He once told a newspaper, “Middle of the road and doing great business.”)Recruited by Philadelphia concert promoter Moe Septee, Nero started the Philly Pops orchestra in 1979, the year Arthur Fiedler died. Fiedler is credited with virtually inventing the modern version of the pops orchestra in B...National newspaper in Mexico says its reporter was killed in western state

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The national newspaper La Jornada said Saturday that its staff reporter in Mexico’s Pacific coast state of Nayarit has been found dead. La Jornada reported the body of journalist Luis Martín Sánchez Iñiguez was found on the outskirts of the state capital, Tepic. The Nayarit state prosecutors’ office reported that Sánchez Iñiguez, 59, had been missing since Wednesday, and issued an appeal to find him. But the office did not immediately confirm the identification of the body. The journalist’s wife reported him missing, along with a computer and his cellphone.Sánchez Iñiguez was last seen in Xalisco, a Nayarit town that has long been linked to the smuggling of heroin and opium. He would be at least the second journalist killed in Mexico this year. In February, news photographer José Ramiro Araujo was stabbed and beaten to death in the northern Mexico border state of Baja California.Police later arrested two youths on a beach near the scene of the attack w...Latest news
