Her fetus also later died at the hospital.Gabriella Dehoyos (Courtesy photo)The 21-year-old, of St. Paul, was riding in her boyfriend’s car with her children in the city’s Summit-University neighborhood when a single shot fired by Harris struck her in the back of the head.“For me, for (the plea) to sink in, I think it’s going to take being in court and seeing this person face to face and telling him how we feel,” Dehoyos said in an interview. “And asking him, Why? Chauncey Billups knows: The cliche is crapola. The harder part is faking it after you’ve made it.“The biggest thing, and me being in that position and having been there before, the biggest thing is just — don’t get bored, man,” Billups, the Denver hoops icon, former Nuggets point guard and current Trail Blazers coach, told me recently when our convo turned to the reigning NBA champs.“That playoff run is so intense and every game is just incredible. And you come back to a regular season where it’s just like, ‘Oh, here we go, (these are) regular season games. I want that fire and intensity.’ Well, you won’t get that again until the playoffs.”The summit smells of cigar and champagne. The climb smells of stale Auntie Anne’s airport pretzels between back-to-backs at Brooklyn and Charlotte.Mr. Big Shot’s Detroit Pistons won it all in 2004. The next fall, they opened up with a record of 7-7 after 14 games. They w...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 13:12:34 GMT

A new zero-bail policy has taken effect in Los Angeles County, and now a dozen cities have taken legal action against it, arguing that it will lead to repeat offenders. The no-bail policy allows suspects arrested for what are known as "non-violent, non-serious" crimes, like retail and car theft, will no longer have to post cash bail to be released from jail. Instead, some could be cited and released right after arrest, while others could be taken to a magistrate where conditions would be set."I don't think the public understands that the differential about whether or not you got out of jail was not based upon your risk to the community or the risk to the victim or the risk of failure to appear," said David Slayton, the Executive Officer of the LA County Superior Court. "The differential about whether or not you got out was based upon whether or not you had money."Slayton says the new rules went into effect on Sunday."The money is not going to make the difference between someone bein...
